Hedgewood Prairie is home to fourth generation Angus breeders whose family has been breeding Angus cattle for almost 50 years. Our herd was established in 2001 with the donor dam Maple Lane Effie 827. Through the use of embryo transfer and the opportunity to purchase the 2003 fall embryo heifer calf crop from Maple Lane Angus our herd has grown to over 125 head of breeding age females. We have made purchases from fellow Kansas Angus breeders and friends at Stucky Ranch, Fink Beef Genetics and Benoit Angus. The foundation of our herd is built from tremendous cow families such as Eisa Erica, Rita, Forever Lady, Everelda, Miss and Lady.

We are located in north central Kansas and our headquarters is situated on 140 acres of pasture. We rent nearly 700 acres of summer grass all located within 25 miles of home. The majority of our herd is fall calving but we also have a small group of spring calving cows too. While we run approximately 30 recipient cows for our embryo transfer program, majority of our embryo work is done with four cooperator herds in our area.

At Hedgewood Prairie, we focus on producing sound, functional, eye appealing cattle. Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are one tool that we use in selecting sires for our AI and embryo programs. However, we select sires with balanced traits and do not try to chase extremes.

Until 2007, we marketed our females through consignment sales including the KS Angus Futurity, the Oklahoma Angus Gathering and the Genex Influence Sale. We were fortunate to participate in the Generations of Angus Heritage Joint Production Sale in 2007 and marketed our largest offering of females to date. Our cattle were very well accepted by those in attendance. On November 23, 2008, we will begin a new chapter as we host Hedgewood Prairie and Friends Annual Production Sale in our new sale facility.

Hedgewood Prairie is a family owned and operated ranch. Brooke and Jason Woodworth along with Brooke’s dad, Joel Harrison, are responsible for all aspects of the operation. Brooke and Jason’s sons Jensen and Carson are fourth generation Angus breeders and though they are still pretty young, they are excited to assist in any way they can.

We are conveniently located just 10 miles south of Interstate 70 and welcome visitors any time. Please give us a call and we will gladly show you around.
